Helpful Hints for Minor Illnesses

  • Children Give plenty of drinks, dose with children's paracetamol. Make an appointment to see the doctor if the condition is worse after two days, or if the child develops earache.
  • Adults Take soluble aspirin, steam inhalations and plenty of drinks.

SICKNESS AND DIARRHOEA

  • Eat nothing for 24 hours, sip water at regular intervals. Once the sickness has stopped, try soup, toast or plain biscuits before eating usual diet. See the doctor if not better after 48 hours.
  • Small Babies Start with half strength feeds after the 24 hours of water feeds.
  • For All Well-being can be improved by using Dioralyte/Rehidrat sachets - see your chemist.

HIGH TEMPERATURE AND FEVER

  • These are not unusual in children. Keep room cool, remove warm clothing and bed clothes. Dose with liquid paracetamol, keep cool, and give clear liquids as required. Contact the doctor for advice if the fever does not settle.
