Practice Newsletter - Winter 2002

This quarter's profile is of our second most Senior Partner Dr Colin Burr
Winter news profile Dr Colin Burr

Age: He won't admit to being anything over 30

Place of birth: Dr Burr hails originally from a village near Windsor in Berkshire.

Family: Dr Burr has been married for 19 years and has one daughter, one son, and a 3rd baby - his 11 year old car!

Education: He attended Leicester University Medical School and qualified in 1983. Part of his medical student training was an attachment in General Practice in  . . . . . . . . Bourne!

Career History: Following "house jobs" Dr Burr spent 3 years undertaking his postgraduate GP training - 2 years at Peterborough District Hospital working in various specialities, plus a year in two local General Practices. In 1987, on the retirement of Dr Sweetnam, Dr Burr was invited to join Drs Smith, Halliday-Pegg and Patel in practice in Bourne.

Hobbies: A keen (if not talented) golfer, he is also addicted to skiing ("the sun, the snow and the mountains - just like Lincolnshire") and has now got his family hooked as well (the children at least!). Other interests include windsurfing, reading, most things aeronautical, Chelsea football club and new jokes!

New nebulisers for the Surgery

One of our patients a Mrs Dawn Upton has very kindly agreed to donate £500.00 to the surgery to purchase some ultrasonic nebulisers. We would like to thank her for her very generous donation which will benefit our patients greatly.

Patient Participation Group

In December 2002 we formed a Patient Participation Group within the Surgery under the Chairmanship of one of our patients Mr Robin Morris. The group will be organising many events throughout the year to raise money to purchase a defibrillator for the Practice. They have a notice board situated opposite the Ladies and Disabled toilets just off the waiting room. Notice of any activities and forthcoming events will be posted on this board. Any future vacancies to sit on the Committee will also be advertised on this board. As the group becomes more established we will notify you of any additional information.

District Nursing at the Galletly Practice

District Nursing at the Galletly Practice is provided by a skill mix team. The District Nurse Team Leader is a first level registered nurse who has undergone specialist training, presently at degree level, in community education and practice. She leads a team of registered nurses and "skilled but not registered" staff.

The service is provided primarily in the patient's own home or residential home. We aim through assessment and the application of nursing skills to offer a person centred, research based, effective service to those people who are unable to access nursing services in a practice setting. Collaborating with other health professionals and agencies, we aim to maximise a person's independence.

Access to the service is by open referral and some of the services we provide include:-
  • Chronic disease management and the management of chronic degenerative disease.
  • Palliative care - provision of high quality individualised palliative care to patients, and those who matter to them, when their disease is no longer responsive to curative treatment.
  • Bereavement support - provision of practical, emotional and psychological support to bereaved carers.
  • Wound management of post-operative, traumatic and chronic wounds.
  • Rehabilitation - supporting recovery to optimum independence.
  • Promotion of continence and management of incontinence.
  • Immunisation
  • Health promotion advice and support.

We work in Partnership with all members of the primary health care team, social services and other statutory and  voluntary agencies as appropriate.

Congratulations to the following members of the District Nursing Team who have just achieved the following qualifications:-
  • Sister Candice Pellett NEBS Management Team Leader award

  • Sister Tracy Hamilton ENB N18 Leg Ulcer management Course (English National Board)

Feedback from our last newsletter

One of our patients commented that Dr Raj Patel could not be all bad if he watches films starring Clint Eastwood. He went on to say ......like the story of the Plastic Surgeon sitting quietly by the fire - he melted!

Dr Aaron Gopee

A new GP, Dr Gopee, will be joining us in mid February and will be consulting on Mondays and Tuesdays. He comes to us from Somerset via the Linc-start GP scheme which is hoped will encourage doctors to come and live and work in Lincolnshire.

Carer's Register

We are in the process of setting up a Carer's Register here at the Practice. If you care for someone on a permanent basis at home we would appreciate you competing a form, which is available from reception, and returning it to the Surgery.

Lincolnshire Target training dates

We will be closing for the Lincolnshire Target training from 12.30 pm on the following Thursdays:-

  • 16th January 2003

  • 13th February 2003

  • 13th March 2003

  • 3rd April 2003

Children in need

The Practice had a fundraising day on 15th November, 2002 very well organised by our super efficient staff member Cheryll Perkins. She decorated the Surgery with lots of "Pudsies" and organised a wonderful tombola which raised  £304.46. Many thanks to all of our patients who supported our efforts on that day.

Keep it or cancel it

During December 120 patients made appointments to see a health professional and failed to keep or cancel them. This meant that 16 hours of appointments were wasted. If you cannot keep or no longer require your appointment please telephone and cancel - if possible giving us 24 hours notice so that we can offer the appointment to someone else. We will accept cancellations on the 562200 number if the 562201 number is engaged.

Help us to help you

Our busiest time for patients booking appointments is between 8.30 a.m. and 9.00 a.m. each day. Mondays are especially busy. If your request for an appointment is routine and not urgent please try to avoid telephoning during this busy half hour when people needing urgent appointments are trying to get through on the telephone. If your request for an appointment is complex e.g. an insurance medical which will require both a doctor and nurse appointment it is especially important that you telephone later in the day as these block our line for at least five minutes.

Gran fell down on the ice and broke her leg and was in a plaster cast for several months. When the time came to remove it, she asked the doctor excitedly, "Does this mean that I can go up the stairs again?" "Yes," he replies. "What a relief," replied gran "It was hard work keep climbing up the drainpipe!!"
